In general the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic crops is considered as agri-business needing much investment. It is true to some extent. The crops like Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum), Stevia etc. are hi-value crops and its commercial cultivation is beyond the imagination of common Indian farmers. The lucrative returns from medicinal and aromatic crops are attracting these common farmers as they are in great loss due to traditional farming. For these farmers there is a need to identify the medicinal crops requiring less investment and having assured market. Among these crops the name of Chandrashoor is in top ten.
Chandrashoor is well known medicinal herb for the traditional healers. Since generations they are using it as medicine in treatment of many human diseases. For this herb they are dependent on its wild population. Many healers grow it for their requirement but they cultivate it in very small scale. Chandrashoor is also very popular among the cattle owners. Its seeds are used to increase the milk production. It is equally effective for the human beings. Although the world community now knows this use through modern research papers but in fact this use is very common in rural areas.
Chandrashoor is a medicinal crop having constant demand. It is well known herb in western markets also. The wild population is becoming endangered. This is the reason the demand of Chandrashoor of cultivated origin is increasing. It is among the crops that can be raised for the cattle. Many cattle owners are growing it for their own use. They are not worried about its sell. Earlier they were purchasing it from the other growers at fairly high rates and adulteration was common.
Chandrashoor is raised as winter season crop. Its duration is 90-120 days. It doesn't require much input but it gives good responses to inputs especially organic inputs. Although the scientific literatures are full of information regarding it's chemical farming but in herbal state Chhattisgarh the farmers have found good results through organic farming. Its average yield is 10-12 quintals per hectare but with the help of organic planning higher yield with good quality seeds can be obtained. Very few insects like this herb. The infestation of Aphid is common but it can be managed through simple organic tools.
The pharmaceutical companies are taking keen interest in this crop. They are amazed with the performance of Chandrashoor seeds. Their new products will make this crop a hi-value crop but at present it is very safe crop for the common farmers.
In initial Allelopathic studies Chandrashoor has been identified as potential herb having strong Allelochemicals that can be used for the eco-friendly weed management. The traditional healers aware of its miraculous properties add it in herbal solutions used to enrich the large trees with medicinal properties. It also helps the trees to recover from injuries. The systematic research on this herb can establish it as herb having multiple uses.
In many states it is under cultivation in fairly large areas but its cultivation is not enough to fulfill the national demand. I have observed that the traders at national market purchase it easily. The traders of the Indian states where dairy farming is common give relatively more prices to this produce. I have many inquires from western buyers but these are very less in number.
The farmers interested in raising this crop can meet the Chandrashoor growers and take advantage of their experiences. It is also raised in many agricultural universities for their own cattle. As it is easily managed crop I am expecting that the farmers will start its commercial cultivation as winter season crop. I have found it very promising crop for coming future.
